Student designs new skyline for South Reading CCG

In December 2013, when South Reading Clinical Commissioning Group decided to revitalise its profile on its website and print collateral, it turned to the University of Reading and its pool of creative talent.

As part of their work experience, students take on a wide range of initiatives for local organisations, including designs for corporate identities, posters, promotional leaflets and websites.'

Working with Rob Banham, Tutor in the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication, and student, Ellie Dawson, a design based on the skyline of South Reading was agreed with the CCG.

Rob explains, 'When I was approached about the project, I knew it would be a great opportunity for Ellie to showcase her skills and the collaboration with the CCG went on to demonstrate the high standard of work being delivered by our students.'

Ellie, a student in her second year of a Graphics Communication degree, describes her approach to the project, 'I began by going out and photographing many of the buildings and major landmarks across the South Reading CCG's locality, such as the wind turbine, and then drew or traced them, with the final image showing them in the correct geographical sequence.
'The project was my first 'real' commercial job and I learned a lot about the software I used to develop the image, while delivering something that will be used in a practical application.'

Elizabeth Johnston, Chair of South Reading CCG, is also very enthusiastic about working with the University, 'We decided early on that we wanted to include a new image that represented the area we serve. The University's student design service fits well with us – we have access to fantastic talent on our doorstep and the student gets to add real projects to their portfolio that will impress any future employer.'

'Ellie's artwork impressed us all and we will be proud to have her work as a high-profile part of our website and branding going forward.'
