Play the walking and cycling game from 29 April – 24 June 2015
Following on from last year’s challenge when almost a quarter of a million miles were racked up, this year we’re inviting local people to walk, run or cycle 300,000 miles on a race to space!
As part of the game, people tap cards (like oyster cards) on Beat Boxes placed on lamp posts throughout Reading, Burghfield, Mortimer, Pangbourne and Theale.
When someone taps the card on the Beat Box it beeps and flashes.
You need to tap two or more boxes to:
- record a journey
- earn points for the individual player
- earn points for the team
The health benefits of the programme are clear. Did you know, for example, that walking just half an hour a day, five-days-a-week has major health benefits and can reduce the risk of developing certain illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, cancers, dementia, depression and anxiety. Taking exercise also helps improve the health of those who already have these illnesses.
As a result of last year’s efforts, 18% more people reported reaching the government’s target of 150 minutes activity a week. This has huge knock-on benefits for health and wellbeing.
Your Beat the Street card will be available from your local GP, library, leisure centre and Reading Museum from Friday 24 April.
The Beat the Street website is: http://reading.beatthestreet.me You will need to register your card on the website before taking part.
