Beat the Street, Reading is designed to encourage and inspire communities to walk to school, to work, to the shops and into town rather than take their car. It will run from 1 May to 4 June 2014 and anyone living or working in Reading can take part.
It is funded by the NHS North and West and South Reading Clinical Commissioning Groups to promote healthier lifestyles, the project is also supported by Reading Borough Council.
The Challenge: For the residents of Reading to collectively walk the distance equivalent to 238,857 miles: the distance from Reading to the moon! On the way registered players can win prizes for themselves and the chance of a cash prize for their Team at the end of the competition.
To play, residents can pick up a Beat the Street card from a local GP practice, Reading museum, local library or Reading Borough Council Leisure Centre. The card activates when tapped against a Beat Box from 1 May, tapping another within the hour records the journey. There are 130 Beat boxes placed on lamp posts across Reading.
